Pavement Engineer |
Brian Shackel is a civil engineer with nearly 40 years experience in pavement engineering including pavement design and construction. He is a recognised authority on concrete block paving, CBP, and is the author of numerous research papers and 3 books on this topic. He is also the author of the well-known LOCKPAVE software package for the design and specification of concrete block paving. Dr Shackel's work on concrete block paving has won him an Award for Excellence from the Concrete Institute of Australia.Based in Sydney, Australia, Dr Shackel has worked on many projects worldwide as a consultant for asphalt, block paving and rigid concrete pavements . He is especially recognised for his work on heavy duty pavements including ports, industrial pavements, container handling facilities and airport pavements. He is also an expert on ecological and permeable pavements and has long been involved in environmental research in the pavement area.
In addition to his theoretical work, Dr Shackel has conducted leading-edge experimental studies in pavement engineering embracing accelerated trafficking tests of more than 200 full-scale pavements including flexible and rigid freeway pavements, heavy duty industrial pavements and concrete block pavements. Moreover, he has supervised field and laboratory trials of several new forms of pavement. These studies have been complemented by laboratory repeated triaxial loading assessments of of a wide range of pavement materials.Dr Shackel has taught pavement engineering at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level for more than 35 years. He is well-known to international audiences having travelled extensively and lectured in more than 24 countries worldwide, including repeated visits to North America and Europe. During these visits he has given lectures and seminars and has conducted short courses on pavement design and construcion with particular emphasis on concrete block paving and heavy duty pavements.
